What are relocated charts?

As an Astrocartographer, I want to make this crystal clear 💠Astrocartography is SO much more than those planetary lines! The lines are important, yes, but they don’t tell the whole story. We cannot neglect relocated charts, which are another essential part of Astrocartography.

A relocated chart recalculates your birth chart by moving your birth data to a different location. Oftentimes in a relocated chart, we see a person’s birth chart angles (ascendant, IC, DC, and MC), houses, and planetary placements change—sometimes drastically! This can have a big influence on how you might feel living in or traveling to a certain location, so I find it extremely important to take this into consideration and not rely solely on the influence of your planetary lines.

Relocated charts could be especially felt if you have a stellium (3 or more planets in the same house or zodiac sign) in your original birth chart, because often times that stellium will shift to a different house and emphasize the area of life represented by that house. For example, having a 4th House stellium in a relocated chart could indicate a major focus on home, family, domestic life, ancestry, and setting roots.

The story about my relocated chart in Madrid

My relocated chart for Madrid is drastically different from my original birth chart in NYC. I want to specifically dive into two things that shifted that have made a huge difference in my life.

  1. My IC angle shifted from Aries in NYC to Cancer in Madrid. The 4th House/IC in the birth chart reveals information about your family, ancestry, sense of home, and how you relate to a location. It can also show information about the energy and vibes of the location that you’re in. In NYC, I felt anxious and on edge a lot, and I felt like I attracted a lot more stress and conflict than in Madrid. Aries energy is a lot more aggressive, outward, and fiesty than Cancer energy. In Madrid and just Spain in general, I feel very safe, comfortable, relaxed, and overall at home (Cancer is ruled by the moon which rules the home.)

2. My birth chart stellium in Scorpio shifted from the 11th House in NYC to the 8th House in Madrid. Now this has been more challenging. The 11th House has to do with our chosen community, and networks, as well as our hopes dreams, and aspirations. Living in New York, I was extremely social and pretty eager to put myself out there. In Madrid, despite being nearly fluent in Spanish and having been here for almost six years now, I feel shier, even closed off at times. I’m a lot more selective about who I spend my time with and very introspective. I’m a lot more self-aware even to the point of being overly self-conscious. This makes a lot of sense, because the 8th House is a more complex house that deals with feeling hidden, intimacy, vulnerability, secrets, taboo topics, psychology, and the subconscious mind.

So, it’s interesting, while I do feel more rooted, grounded, focused, and at home here in Madrid, it’s been a bit hard to come to grips with feeling so much more introverted. Situations like these remind us that it’s important to lean on some of the traits and themes found in our original natal birth charts to remember who we truly are and to understand that we are multi-layered beings.
